PEN International, PEN Nederland en de situatie in België
PEN, afkorting van Poets, Essayists, Novelists / Playwrights, Editors en Non Fiction Writers, is een wereldwijde organisatie van en voor schrijvers, die de vrije doorvoer van literatuur en de vrijheid van expressie hoog in het vaandel heeft. Er zijn meer dan 140 Pencentra in ruim 100 landen. Het hoofdkantoor is gevestigd in Londen. PEN Nederland, in 1923 opgericht door de dichter P.C. Boutens, telt ongeveer 350 leden. België kent twee pencentra: PEN Vlaanderen en PEN Belgique (franstalig).
PEN Emergency Fund
Het PEN Emergency Fund (PEF) is een in Nederland gevestigd, wereldwijd opererend noodfonds, in 1971 opgericht door de schrijver A. den Doolaard. Het ondersteunt ernstig vervolgde schrijvers en journalisten, al dan niet in ballingschap, met een eenmalige toelage waarmee zij zichzelf (en in bijzondere gevallen hun familie) in een noodsituatie kunnen handhaven, bijvoorbeeld wanneer ze acuut het land moeten ontvluchten of na marteling dringend medicatie nodig hebben. Jaarlijks worden over de hele wereld tientallen schrijvers geholpen. Het fonds opereert in nauwe samenwerking met de ervaren onderzoekers van PEN International. Het dagelijks bestuur bestaat uit slechts twee leden, die soms nog op dezelfde dag geld kunnen overmaken. De overhead van het fonds is daardoor vrijwel nihil: al het geld gaat rechtstreeks naar bedreigde schrijvers. Alles wat u doneert, komt bij deze ernstig bedreigde voorvechters van het vrije woord terecht. Het PEN Emergency Fund, statutair ook vastgelegd onder de Nederlandse naam Stichting Fonds Schrijvers in Nood, heeft een ANBI-status (RSIN 8167.43.447). Een donatie is aftrekbaar van uw inkomstenbelasting.
